Pathology collectors play an important role in healthcare by collecting samples from patients for tests. These include blood, urine, faeces, sputum, swabs, and other samples depending on the test required. Their duties include explaining procedures to patients, following infection control protocols, and collecting samples with minimal discomfort. They are responsible for accurately handling, labelling, and preparing samples for testing, recording patient and specimen details, maintaining and cleaning equipment, and communicating with patients to provide reassurance and address any concerns. Additionally, after receiving further training, pathology collectors may perform Electrocardiograms (ECGs), manage Holter monitors (portable devices for tracking heart rhythms), and conduct blood pressure monitoring.

Blended

The domestic course is delivered in blended mode, combining trainer-led learning, live online theory delivery, classroom and simulation-based training, LMS-supported self-study and professional experience placement. Delivery is scheduled across 26 weeks, including a 2-week break.

This course includes a 35-hour Professional Experience Placement (PEP) completed as a single block in a pathology collection setting, which may include private or public outpatient pathology collection centres, hospitals and/or GP clinics. The placement is organised by IHNA and is designed to help students apply their knowledge and practical skills in a real workplace environment after completing the required theory and simulation-based assessments. Before starting placement, students must meet placement readiness requirements and submit required documentation, including police clearance, Working with Children Check and immunisation evidence where applicable.

There are no formal training package prerequisites for this course. However, applicants must complete a Pre-Training Review (PTR) and meet IHNA admission requirements, including:

  • Successful completion of Australian Year 10 or equivalent
  • Language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills at ACSF exit level 3 for Reading, Writing, Oral Communication and Numeracy, and ACSF exit level 4 for Learning

*Mature-age applicants aged 22 years and above may also be considered without the minimum education requirement, subject to individual review.

The course uses a range of assessment methods to measure knowledge, theory and practical performance. These include:

  • Knowledge Based Assessment (KBA): multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank and matching questions
  • Theory Assessment (TA): short-answer questions
  • Simulation-Based Assessment (SBA): direct observation and role plays in simulated environments
  • Professional Experience Placement (PEP): workplace-based assessment where required

Students who are not yet competent on their first attempt are given two additional reassessment opportunities.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

With RPL we assess your competency based on formal, non-formal, informal learning or direct work experience based on the required skills of the course.

Credit Transfer(CT)

We use CT where you’ve completed units of study at another TAFE College or Registered Training Organisation that meet the requirements of another course. We grant credit according to the Certification, Issuing, and Recognition of Qualifications and Statements of Attainment. Assessing a CT is free.
