Celebrating 20 Years of Caring with Passion — The IHNA Story
By the Institute of Health and Nursing Australia | July 2026
Every great story has a beginning. Ours started in 2007 — in a single campus in Melbourne, with a small team, a big dream, and an unshakeable belief that healthcare education could be done differently.
Not just better. Differently.
More human. More hands-on. More passionate.
Today, as we step proudly into our 20th year, we look back at a journey that has taken us from one room in Melbourne to four campuses across Australia — and forward to a future that is more exciting than ever.
This is the IHNA story. And it belongs to every single person who has ever been part of it.
2007 — Where It All Began
Melbourne. A small campus. A registration as a Registered Training Organisation. And a founding belief that Australia needed a different kind of healthcare training provider.
Not one that processed students through a system.
One that genuinely invested in the people sitting in its classrooms.
IHNA opened its doors in 2007 with that belief at its core — and it has never once wavered from it.
2008 — Opening Doors for the World
Just one year after opening, IHNA launched its Bridging Program for Internationally Qualified Overseas Nurses — recognising that Australia's healthcare system needed the skills and experience that trained nurses from around the world brought.
This was more than a program. It was a statement.
You are welcome here. Your skills matter. We will help you rebuild your career in Australia.
That commitment to internationally qualified nurses remains one of the most important chapters in IHNA's story — and continues to this day.
2010 — Heading West
Three years in, IHNA opened its Perth Campus — taking the IHNA model of passionate, hands-on healthcare training to Western Australia for the first time.
Perth was proof that what IHNA was building wasn't just a Melbourne story. It was an Australian one.
2013 — Sydney Joins the Family
The Sydney Campus opened in 2013, bringing IHNA to New South Wales and expanding its reach to Australia's largest city.
Three campuses. Three cities. One unwavering mission.
2017 — Growing Stronger in Perth
By 2017, demand in Perth had grown so significantly that IHNA opened a new, expanded campus on St. George Terrace — one of Perth's most prestigious addresses.
Western Australia had embraced IHNA. And IHNA embraced it right back.
2018 — A Commitment to Quality, Confirmed
In 2018, IHNA achieved ASQA re-registration — the national regulator's formal confirmation that IHNA's standards of education, governance, and student support met the highest bar in Australian vocational training.
This wasn't just a compliance milestone.
It was a reaffirmation of everything IHNA had been built on.
Quality is not a box we tick. It is a value we live.
2019 — Welcoming the World's Best Nurses
The Entry Program for Internationally Qualified Registered Nurses — EPIQRN — launched in 2019, creating a dedicated, structured pathway for internationally trained registered nurses to transition into the Australian healthcare system with confidence and support.
Nurses from across the globe found a home at IHNA.
And Australia's healthcare system is stronger for it.
2022 — The Diploma of Nursing. Accredited.
2022 marked one of the most significant milestones in IHNA's academic history — the formal accreditation of the Diploma of Nursing by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC).
This accreditation meant one thing above all else:
IHNA graduates are trained to the highest nursing standard in Australia.
Not almost. Not approximately. To the highest standard. Full stop.
2023 — Excellence Recognised. Again. And Again. And Again.
In 2023, IHNA received the Excellence Award in International Education — for the third consecutive time.
Three years in a row.
When excellence becomes a habit, it stops being an achievement and starts being a standard. That is what IHNA had become by 2023 — an institution where excellence was simply expected.
2023 — Brisbane. And a Bigger Melbourne.
The same year brought two more landmark moments.
The grand opening of the Brisbane Campus brought IHNA to Queensland — giving students in the Sunshine State access to the same world-class healthcare training that thousands of Australians across Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth had already experienced.
And back in Melbourne, the addition of the Lonsdale Street campus gave the city a larger, more modern home — a facility as ambitious as the students walking through its doors.
Four campuses. Four cities. One mission — still burning as brightly as it did in 2007.
2024 — A New Partnership. A New Identity.
Two more chapters were written in 2024.
First, the Cintana Strategic Partnership — aligning IHNA with Arizona State University, one of the world's most innovative and respected universities. This partnership marked the beginning of a new era — bringing global academic excellence into the IHNA ecosystem and opening possibilities that would have seemed unimaginable at the first Melbourne campus in 2007.
Then came the rebranding of IHNA.
A new look. A fresh identity. A bold signal to Australia and the world that IHNA was not just reflecting on its past — it was building its future.
Same passion. Same purpose. Bigger ambition than ever.
2026 — Our 20th Year Begins
And here we are.
Nineteen years completed. The 20th year has just begun.
Four campuses. Nearly 30,000 graduates. Courses spanning nursing, anaesthetic technology, pathology collection, sterilisation services, community services, and individual support. A 92.4% student satisfaction rate. An ANMAC-accredited Diploma of Nursing. An Arizona State University partnership. And a team of educators, advisors, and support staff who show up every single day because they genuinely believe in what they are doing.
This is not a company that stumbled into healthcare education.
This is an institution that was built for it.
To Every Person Who Made This Possible
To our graduates — all 30,000 of you.
You are nurses in hospitals across Australia. You are pathology collectors, sterilisation technicians, support workers, and anaesthetic technologists. You are the people who show up when others need help the most. You are the reason IHNA exists.
This milestone is yours.
To our educators
The ones who stayed late to give feedback, who answered questions they had already answered a hundred times, who celebrated every student breakthrough as if it were their own.
You are the heartbeat of this institution.
To our industry partners
The hospitals, clinics, aged care facilities, and health services that opened their doors to our students and gave them the clinical experience that no classroom alone can provide.
You made our graduates real.
To our staff — past and present
Who kept the wheels turning, the campuses running, and the students supported through every challenge.
This is your story too.
The 20th Year Is Just the Beginning
IHNA did not spend 19 years building something ordinary.
We built something that changes lives.
And we are just getting started.
If you have ever thought about a career in healthcare — nursing, pathology, anaesthetic technology, community services — there has never been a better time to take that step.
Australia needs healthcare professionals.
And IHNA has spent nearly 20 years perfecting how to train them.
