This course is for healthcare professionals who wish to update their knowledge and skills in administering and monitoring medications and intravenous therapy to patients. Lack of adequate knowledge or carelessness while administering medication and IV therapy puts patients at risk of injury or even death. Nurses must, therefore, adopt safe practices in order to optimise patient outcomes and reduce the risk of harm or complications that may arise due to wrong medication or improper monitoring of the patient.
Unfortunately in the healthcare sector, errors associated with wrong dosages and/or wrong medication concentrations are all too common and sometimes have a critical impact on the patient’s well-being. All nurses and healthcare practitioners must stay updated with currently relevant information on the correct administration of medicine. They should know how to monitor and manage the inherent risks that come with medication administration. They are required to be capable of calculating dosage, interpreting written instructions, assessing the patient for the effectiveness of the medicine and to judge for possible side effects, and responding quickly and appropriately to any allergic reactions.
